In the town of Bree, 2nd week of late winter, 325 CY

Agnes Gum stood by the sink of her cottage. Carefully wiping a bone china teacup, she set it down on the counter. The old woman squinted at the young man walking past her window. She cocked her head and thought of where she had seen him before. Wasn’t that the lad that helped replant her roses last year? He helped out after that fool of a wizard promised to fix the damage his infernal chicken hut had wrought. Normal chickens were one thing, but when an enchanted hut with giant chicken legs decides to take a stroll through your rose garden…well…that’s another matter entirely.
Agnes didn’t want to continue this train of thought. Everything Cornwall touched turned out wrong. She smiled imagining the hapless wizard being chased through the town of Bree by his own hut. Probably would never happen, but a girl could wish.
“Beck,” Agnes said softly, remembering the lad’s name. He looked different today. The boy seemed taller and had a determined look on his face. The padded armor he wore and battered shield on his back spoke plainly of the lad’s decision. “My rosebushes will never be the same,” Agnes mused.
