Beck returned to Bree where his wounds were attended by his mum and the reverend mother herself. Beck tells the holy woman about fighting the creatures. She affirms that they are ghouls. Despite her protest, Beck continues with his plan to search for treasure.
A short walk through town offers no possible allies. It is no wonder that Beck can’t find anyone to join him. His armor is torn and blood stained and his sword looks cheap. New gear will improve his image, but first he needs more treasure.
Beck hikes south into the fens again. He spends the morning trying to find the grassy mound where the ghouls made their nest. No luck so far. He does however cross paths with two wild boar and four sows. Beck notices them well in time and is able to move out of their way.
It is early afternoon before Beck finds the trail leading to the ghoul clearing. The hovels stand in the clearing. As Beck moves slowly into the clearing, he can see bones scattered in the muck. The bones looked well gnawed on, some clearly animal, others unknown. Beck shudders to think about it.
He pushes his sword into the dim opening of one of the hovels. Nothing moves inside. Quickly checking all the others yields the same result. Breathing a sigh of relief, Beck begins a careful search of all of them.
Hidden in piles of dead grass, Beck sees a small chest. One of the ghouls was hoarding some loot. Beck opens the chest and discovers an ornate silver snuffbox, a bracelet set with a green emerald, and a small pile of silver and copper coins (250 silver coins and 800 copper pieces). His eyes grow wide at the treasure. Beck’s never seen this much accumulated wealth.
Also inside one of the hovels is a filthy waistcoat. In another time it would have been worn by a wealthy man. Beck leaves it to be reclaimed by the marsh undoubtedly like its owner.
Beck returns to the town of Bree, encountering no other beings except for a couple farmers making ready for ploughing the fields. They stop their discussion as they see the young adventurer carrying the wooden chest. The Dead Pony Inn will be a beehive of news this evening.
More to come…
[GM Notes ~ Session 3 was a simple recovery mission for Beck. He was lucky that the wild boar didn’t get angry. Something I do need to remember is that not all encounters need devolve into violence. Beck’s exploration around Bree is still quite dangerous and he’ll need to find a few more adventuring companions. I’m hopeful that his early success will garner some interest.]
