Play report of a new campaign.

I’ve taken a break from my solo play. I was happy using Mydwandr for my solo game. Now, I’m back with my fatbeard pals to explore more of my campaign world of Reuel. The rules I am using, I call Fatbeard Whitebox. In essence, it is FMAG Whitebox with my house rules bolted on. This is what Whitebox is meant to be–a framework structure which is altered to fit how you want to DM. So, with rules and setting ready to go, what follows is the first play report.

Session 1 — Fatbeard Whitebox, Castle Maub, 11-15-2025 [In game time, 11-15-325, Players, D, K, and T, with myself as DM]

The adventure opens as our heroes are travelling the King’s Road to the town of Bree. Night has fallen and they are looking for a place to camp. Brogo and Drogo (hobbit fighters from the Kettleshire in the midlands), Tharn (dwarven fighter from the Five Kings), Innocentius (human cleric of Eos, from Granden Vale), and Jim Barley (a drunken sod from the nearest tavern).

The party sees a campfire in the distance. Brogo sneaks up on the scene spying 9 goblins and four humans. The goblins appear to be threatening the humans, desiring to rob them of their weapons or suffer bodily harm.

The party jumps into action, Brogo kills one goblin with a sling stone, Tharn roars a dwarven battle cry, and Innocentius and Drogo move to block the goblins. Jim Barley moves cautiously towards the goblins.

They catch the goblins by surprise and inflict three casualties in total. The goblins flee in terror. Brogo finds a curious red metal coin with some kind of rune on it.

The humans are a minstrel troupe led by a man named Zebedee. He gives Drogo a gift for saving them. It is a small clay bottle of “Stay Death’s Hand”…an elixir that can stabilize a dying ally. The minstrels say they are traveling to Bree and then on to Granden Vale. The party shares their food and fire for the evening.

The minstrels tell some stories in the night and the party picks up two rumors.

  1. A knight came to Bremerhaven claiming he had fallen asleep for a hundred years or more in a thorn choked castle. He spoke with an odd dialect and his clothing and armor were old fashioned. He stayed two days and left.
  2. One of the minstrels sang a song with the lyrics, “Treasure the Sun and Moon, but seek that which is writ in the blood.”

Day 2
The party meets with a knight and his retinue. Sir Chadwick from Bruckstone Fortress in Granden Vale. His leige lord, Sir Esmund has set him to the midlands to serve the king for a short term. The knight said that more goblinkin are moving in the area, but they had no encounters with them.

Party moves closer to Bree and encounter a curious woods. The west side of the road holds old growth forest, untouched by human hand. The east side holds forest that shows sign of being forested by humans.

A dire boar ambushes the party. Brogo is thought to have been gored but his luck holds fast and he is unscathed. The dire boar is dealt a critical blow by Innocentius. A fire is made and all feast on the choice cuts of the wild boar.

A few hours later the party reaches the town of Bree. Thane stays in the field to talk with the merchants assembled along with their wagons there. Innocentius spies a church of Eos and attempts to make a contact, the hobbits follow Jim Barley to enter the Dead Pony Inn.

XP awarded…3 goblins (1/2 HD each), 1 dire boar (5 HD)….total xp is 650xp. I award 100xp per HD. No treasure to speak of. We have 3 PCs and 2 henchmen. PCs get 163xp each. Henchmen get 81xp each.

End Session 1

    1. Hey, Matt. Good to hear from you. I don’t have the FBWB available the blog. It is mainly a conglomeration of the best of FMAG Whitebox, BX, and other house rules I’ve collected over the years. I’d be happy to share a copy with you. Send me an email and I’ll get you a copy.
