Continuing from our last session, the PCs have recovered one sheep from the goblins and now have entered the dim forest of the Grimshank Woods to follow several more goblins dragging a couple sheep farther into the woods.

Brillo, a hobbit burglar, takes point and scampers into the woods in pursuit. The others in the party do the same. Brillo moves over a wooded rise and spies a grisly scene where several of the sheep had been butchered. As he nears, two large flies (about 2′ long) lift off of overhanging trees to attack him.

Brillo is too quick for the flies. He wounds one with his light crossbow as the rest of the party rushes to aid him. One fly takes an interest in Volanis, the fighter, landing on his chest and seeking to attack his face through the warrior’s helm.

Innocentius swings his flail and smashes the other fly, but it takes several rounds to get the other pesky fly off of Volanis. Jim Barley, the human fighter, misses with a tavern brawling body slam. Innocentius, the cleric, manages to grab the fly and the halfling fighter, Brogo, stabs it to death.

The flies didn’t manage to injury any of the party, but it took considerable effort to kill them!

They move on…

Passing an area of recent cutting of smaller trees (about 1′ or less), the party reaches a small stream of muddy water. A thicket of tangled bushes lies beyond and a small wooden pallisade. Three goblin archers are perched in a large tree within the pallisade.

Valerius, the cleric, pushes through the stream to take cover in the thicket. Tharn and Innocentius are targeted by the archers. Innocentius is grazed by a goblin arrow. Brogo climbs a tree and readies his sling while Drogo, his hobbit henchman stands guard, spear ready, at the base of the tree.

Jim Barley and Brillo join Valerius in the thicket and Volanis moves north of Brogo’s position. A squad of goblin swordsmen come out of the fort. There are nine in total.

Half of the goblins chase after Volanis, one of them turning back in response to Brogo’s failed sling stone.

The battle ensues. Valerius sets fire to the thicket, creating cover using the smoke. The goblin swordsmen are reinforced by five more goblins coming around the south side of the stockade.

The party takes several minor wounds, the most seriously wounded though is Volanis, who took four points from a goblin blade. Innocentius and Tharn decided to have their shields splintered to prevent taking damage. The goblins take heavy losses and fail their morale.

Brogo, spying from the treetops, sees a half dozen more goblins in different garb inside the stockade. They are wearing black leather and have shields painted with a yellow hand on them. Also, he spies a goblin shaman. The party decides to retreat from the stockade, pushing burning material against the stockade walls as they do so.

The goblins come out of the stockade. The black clad goblins are reinforced by six more goblins (not in similar garb). They stop to put out the burning pile near the walls.

The party escapes the woods and encounters Abner the shepherd. They tell him of the goblins they’ve fought and that the sheep are beyond hope. The party walks back to the town of Bree.
