Session 13, 2nd Week of Midspring, Grimshank Woods (5-14-25)
Odette says a prayer over the fallen bandits and then they hide the bodies in case a larger group of bandits travel the game trail. Felix stands watch. The party takes a short rest, sharing a loaf of bread and some hard cheese. It is about 2pm and the party decides to walk in the direction that Felix first encountered the bandits.
About an hour later, Felix encounters a group of skunks! Fortunately he spies them before they see him. Felix gives them a wide berth and the skunks ramble off into the forest underbrush.
After another hour, Felix hears motion along the trail. He sees a goblin hunting party. Eight goblins are moving along the trail, their short bows at the ready. They are hunting for game. Felix moves quietly back to warn his companions. [Felix made a successful stealth roll.]
Felix warns Beck and they prepare an ambush should the goblins continue to move towards them.
Q: Do the goblins continue along the trail? (Likely) D: 06 -> Yes they do!
The PCs surprise the goblins in an ambush. Beck launches an arrow an kills one of the goblins! [He only had one hit point!]
Lugan misses with his crossbow. Felix hides in the bushes next to the trail. Odette takes cover.
The goblins return fire but only Odette is slightly injured by an arrow.
[Morale check, 2d6=3, the goblins stand and fight!]
Beck fires again and…misses. Lugan reloads his crossbow. Odette fires a sling stone at a goblin killing it! [Another 1 HP goblin!]
Q: Do the goblins take cover and fire their bows? (Likely) D: 65, no!
The goblins screech in anger, draw their long knives, and rush forward.
Beck pulls his longsword and Lugan unslings his axe. Odette readies her mace and shield. Felix makes ready to spring at the goblins with a backstab.
Beck cuts a goblin, injuring it. [1hp left]. Lugan swings his dwarven axe but the goblin ducks. Odette swings wildly with her mace but misses. Felix stabs a goblin in the back [with advantage] killing another goblin!
The goblins check morale and fail. They fall back, running wild with fear into the bushes! The party recovers 20cp and 3sp. They notice that the goblin arrows are of the same quality as those found in possession of the bandits. The goblin long knives are also poorly crafted, similar to those found at Fort Halberd. The PCs decide to get out of the Grimshank Woods and recover their horses. They fear that a goblin war party may be in pursuit.
As they break the cover of the woods, they hear the howls of worgs and the taunting calls of goblins. Four large wolves…worgs to be exact…burst out of the woods, goblin riders hanging on for dear life. The party spur their horses as the pursuit begins.
[I roll 2d6 for worgs and PCs. Result of 8 for each.] The worgs chase after the horses as the party races towards Bree. In the distance, Beck can see a group of farmers gathering their tools and preparing to aid the party. Will it be too late?
[GM note–I reasoned that the worgs will either d6…1-4 attack horse or 5-6 attack the rider.] A worg lunges at Beck’s horse but misses! Another clamps down hard on the leg of Lugan’s pony. [Roll 2d6…10…Lugan stays on the pony.] The other two worgs try to snap at Felix’s horse and at Beck but both miss. Goblins fire their short bows at Beck and Lugan. Both are hit. [Lugan is down to 6hp left.]
Beck cuts at a worg injuring it. [Worg has 5hp remaining.] Odette spurs her horse to aid Beck…but misses the worg. Felix holds the reins in his teeth and slashes at a worg with his dagger, but cannot hit it.
Lugan slashes at a worg with his axe and wounds it. His pony kicks it savagely doing more damage. [3 points in total] The worg howls in pain letting go of its grip on the pony.
The farmers are running to aid the party, yelling and brandishing their tools.
Round 2
Worgs snap at the horses but miss. A goblin slashes at Beck, but his armor protects him. Another goblin stabs Odette…critical hit for 3 points! [I roll to see if she stays in the saddle…8…yes, Odette holds on.]
A lot of misses later…Lugan is bitten by a worg but stays on his pony. A worg bites Lugan’s pony for 1hp. Lugan makes a save to stay in the saddle…5…Lugan fails the save. His pony stumbles and Lugan falls to the ground. [I roll 1d6 damage for the fall…5 points! Lugan is a -1 HP!]
Lugan rolls a death save…6…a fail! His armor allows one additional save…3! Lugan fails his second save. Lugan lies on the ground, neck broken and dead.
The farmers arrive and aid Odette in fighting a worg. They deal damage to the worg [6pts!] and kill it. Beck slashes at another worg cutting it. The works and goblins have had enough. They flee, loping back into the Grimshank Woods.
Lugan the dwarf’s body lies still. His soul is already in the dwarven halls of his ancestors…
In all, the PCs killed 1 worg and 2 goblins. It was a hard fought battle and now one of their own has fallen.
End of Session
Note–This is where I paused my Mydwandr solo play (back in May 2025). Where do I go from here? I’m not sure if I want to continue with these characters or begin something new. I’ve enjoyed using Mydwandr for the solo game. I’m thinking about running something different using Cairn RPG rules for awhile. Also, I’ll continue to post session notes from our roll20 games. We play most weekends, alternating GMs. The sessions that I run, I will do my best to describe in this blog.
Happy New Year to all of you!
I hope you all have the chance for some great gaming this new year!
